In most developed countries, the available forms are set out in published standards, although a number of specialized and patented cross-sections are also available.
I-beam (I-shaped cross section: in Britain universal beams (UB) and universal columns (UC) are included; in Europe includes sections IPE, HE, HL, HD and others; in the USA includes Wide Flange (WF) and H sections)
Z-shape (half flange in opposite directions)
HSS shape (Hollow structural section also known as SHS (structural hollow section) and includes square, rectangular, circular (pipe) and elliptical cross sections)

Bar, piece of metal, rectangular (flat) cross-section and long, but not so wide as to be called a sheet.

Open-core steel beam
While many sections are manufactured by hot or cold rolling, others are made by welding flat or bent plates together (for example, larger circular hollow sections are made of flat plate bent in a circle and welded with seam).
